Autism is a neurological disorder that causes developmental problems initiating during childhood and lasting all through life if not treated appropriately. Autism is not a mental illness and is not a consequence of inappropriate parenting or psychosocial problems at home, hence, parents are not accountable directly for their child’s condition. Our children are being born into a world more toxic at every level, than, could ever have been imagined. Today, about every person on this planet has some degree of heavy metal toxicity (from air pollution, amalgam fillings in teeth, fish, in utero exposure from their mother’s lifestyle, ground and water contamination, etc.), the fact that the World Health Organization (WHO) acknowledges environmental pollution as the underlying cause of 80% of all chronic degenerative diseases.
I see Autism as a social learning disability. Children with Autism develop differently from other children in different areas of growth. They might have delays in language, social, cognitive skills and motor skills. Cognitive skills are mental skills that are used in the process of acquiring knowledge such as attention, memory, reasoning, perception, intuition, symbolic thinking – writing and reading are the use of symbols and if children cannot think symbolically, they cannot learn to manipulate letters and words. While their motor skills, like lifting their head, rolling over, balancing, crawling, walking, grasping objects, hand eye co-ordination might be the same as other children their age. They might be very capable at putting puzzles together or solving computer problems, but not very proficient at easy things like talking or making friends. An Autistic child might also learn a skill and then not recall it.
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurological disorder that includes a spectrum of diagnoses varying from Autism to Pervasive Developmental Disorder (PDD). Autism and PDD impacts normal brain development leaving most individuals with communication problems, difficulty with typical social interactions and a tendency to repeat specific patterns of behaviour. There is also quite a restricted repertoire of activity and interests.  Early signs can be noticed between 12 and 24 months of age, but is more often gone unnoticed until 3 years of age. It is very important for parents to be aware of these early potential signs and educate themselves. A child may demonstrate only a few of these symptoms in combination (between 12-24 months):

  • Develop language then loses it, or doesn't acquire language at all
  • May appear deaf, respond unevenly or not at all to sounds
  • Difficulty consoling during transitions (tantrums)
  • Difficulty sleeping / wakes at night
  • Does not "point and look"
  • Failure to bond (e.g. child is indifferent to parents' presence)

Causes of Autism:

  • Genetic predisposition.
  • Complications in pregnancy and child birth.
  • Viral infections like Rubella during the first trimester of pregnancy.
  • Maternal exposure to mercury (e.g., consumption of seafood high in mercury, mercury dental fillings, etc.).
  • Exposure to certain other environmental toxins like heavy metals.
  • Vaccines.
  • Digestive abnormalities or allergies to certain foods like dairy products.
  • Lack of Glutathione (glutathione is an antioxidant and a detoxifying agent in our body).
  • Candida Overgrowth, since it is caused due to a dysfunctional immune system (could be due to overuse of Antibiotics).
  • Foods containing Genetically Modified Organisms.
  • Other causes of Autism include excessive use of oral antibiotics, since it suppresses the immune system.
  • A Hiatus Hernia that disrupts protein digestion.
In short, all of the above causes point towards a compromised immune system which might have led to your child’s Autism, by affecting that child’s biologic response to an environmental exposure that, in turn, deregulates the developing brain.
 Levels of Autism:

Following are the different levels of Autism that help in analyzing the severity of this disorder.

  • Classical Autism: The symptoms of classical Autism are usually recognized by the time child reaches three years of age. There may be delayed talking, unable to speak two words by age two, lack of eye contact, lack of pointing or gesturing. The child may not look when their name is called, despite normal hearing. They dislike cuddling or touching, lack empathy or understanding of others' perspectives. Lack peer relationships and prefer solo play. They constantly rock their body or flap their hands. Are unable to feel pain or cold, and are extremely sensitive to bright light, certain sounds, textures, and other sensory stimuli.
  • Asperger Syndrome: These patients are often not diagnosed until age 3. Children suffering from Asperger syndrome are able to attend school, work in offices and live a normal life. They are considered to be highly functioning and may be extremely talented in distinct fields like arts, music, drama, etc. They may be able to recite whole movies, memorize endless facts about obscure subjects. The most common problem associated with this condition, includes, social and communication skills as the children may have speech difficulties and, may struggle in establishing relationships with others. They may show odd repetitive behaviors and follow strict routines.
  • Kanner's Syndrome: This is also known as early infantile Autism which occurs before the age of three. These children may appear unaware of their surroundings, with detachment from parents or others, and may focus particularly on one or two objects only. They may be very routine based, like want everything to be the same including food, clothing, music, TV shows, etc. They may show an obsessive interest in small things, patterns, music, puzzles, etc. They may be unable to make eye contact with people around them, and may not respond to standard communication. They may also be deeply affected by noise, bright lights and smells.
  • Rett Syndrome: This is mainly associated with girls, as in boys the syndrome dies before birth or shortly after. Initially, the child development or growth is normal, but after 16 to 18 months the development appears to reverse. Children may start losing control over their hands and feet, and their motor skills (like balancing, walking, grasping objects, hand eye co-ordination) may also revert. Speech delays or a loss of verbal skills are the commonly observed symptoms in girls. They may also exhibit unusual repetitive hand movements, unusual patterns of walking, may have breathing problems, seizures, rigid muscles, retarded growth.
  • Childhood Disintegrative Disorder: This is an extremely rare disorder affecting mostly boys. The symptoms of childhood disintegrative disorder are usually observed between the years of two and four. The condition leads to disintegration of physical, verbal, mental and social abilities. The child may withdraw from their normal behavior and lose the ability to communicate with people around them. They may also lose bladder, bowel control and develop seizures. Usually these children have very low intelligence.
  • Pervasive Disintegrative Disorder Not Otherwise Specified, also known as (PDD-NOS): A diagnosis of the PDD is primarily made when the symptoms do not fall within any of the existing specific categories of Autism. The typical symptoms include difficulty in interacting socially and problems communicating with others.
Treatment objectives in Autism:
The main goals of treatment are to lessen associated deficits and family distress, and to increase quality of life and functional independence. No single treatment is best suitable for the child. The treatment should be typically planned to suit needs of the child. Educational programs which can be sustained by the child should be planned. In addition to the educational program other treatments like behavior therapy can help if started at an early age. The goals of behavioral therapy should be to achieve child ability to learn to do self-care, to learn and perform social, and job skills. Behavioral therapy may show improvement in over all functioning of the child. It may also decrease the symptom severity and maladaptive behaviors. Other therapeutic approaches include applied behavior analysis, developmental models, structured teaching, speech and language therapy, social skills therapy, and occupational therapy. Educational interventions also may have some benefits. Applied Behavior analysis treatment has demonstrated effectiveness in enhancing global functioning in preschool children and is well-established for improving intellectual performance of young children

 Homeopathic remedies improve the behavior of children with ASD
Homeopathy views any alteration in physical or mental health as a Miasmatic or inherited disorder. Miasm or inherited predisposition can be acquired during life or be dormant in the DNA from birth, inherited from a parent, or acquired as a result of lifestyle, environment, occupation, trauma or the aging process that trigger its appearance - first as a symptom and then as a full-blown disease. To understand Autism, we have to first understand the concept of Miasms.

The  known Miasms that are responsible for all chronic diseases are: Psora, Sycosis, Syphilis, Tuberculosis . Physical expressions of these Miasms can vary, and when these outer manifestations are suppressed instead of being cured, then the Miasm is driven deeper into the tissues and organs and is forced to manifest itself through acute, sub acute and later chronic disease conditions.

A dormant and latent Miasmatic state can be woken up by many triggers. Like vaccinations, emotions, life style, diet, puberty, menopause, pregnancy, etc. Physical and mental triggers can activate latent Miasmatic states anytime! Some emotions suffered during pregnancy like: fear, feeling of rejection, stress, mental abuse, etc suffered by the Mom during pregnancy can also be prevalent emotional triggers for the making of a challenged child.

Gene-environment interaction in Autism means that genes passed on to a child may contribute to that child’s Autism, not because the genes directly influence the developing nervous system, but because, they affect that child’s biologic response to an environmental exposure that, in turn, deregulates the developing brain.

So now the question is that what is a Miasm:

Disease predispositions or our genetic makeup is called ‘Miasms’. The effect in the same generation is called ‘Acquired Miasm’ and the effect that shows up in future generations is called ‘Inherited Miasm’. Homeopathic principles believe that there is always one of these 3 main causes of diseases that should be addressed to elicit a cure:

  • Acquired susceptibility to a disease.

  • Effects of specific or abnormal stressors
Talking a little bit about different types of Miams, starting with Psora: Psora Miasm is the mother of all chronic diseases, goes back the farthest in human history. It includes all skin diseases, most mental illness, allergies, varicose veins, hemorrhoids, most dysfunctional diseases of organs and systems.
Sycosis Miasm is held to be responsible for many sexual and urinary disorders, and affections of the joints, warty growths, etc.

Syphilis Miasm is held responsible for many diseases of the nervous system, heart diseases, ulcerations, as well as a range of psychological diseases such as alcoholism, depression, suicidal tendencies and insanity.

In certain irreversible cases like Autoimmune Disorders such as: Thyroid issues, Rheumatoid Arthritis, etc, where the Miasm cannot be changed, Homeopathic remedies still focus on achieving physiological balance of the body, reducing the Miasmatic influence to the body.

A variety of other individual cases including some in my own practice, show great promise in using homeopathy to help children with autism. Homeopathy is a very individualized form of treatment and I strongly recommend seeking the help of a professional homeopath who will do a detailed intake to select the remedy in the correct potency to give your child the best outcome with homeopathy. In addition, using a method like CEASE Therapy that combines homeopathy with orthomolecular medicines provides further support to your child. Homeopathy offers a wider range of options than conventional medicine. Rather than prescribing strong and addictive drugs, Homeopathic treatment of Autism is constitutional having a holistic approach, and believing in the concept of treating the whole person. However one of the most common questions I get is “What homeopathic remedy can I use to help my child?” So, the following are a few of the remedies that will be considered when evaluating your child with autism.
Agaricus – Sings, talks, but does not answer. Indifference, fearlessness, singing, shouting, and muttering; rhymes and prophesies. Jerking that ceases once asleep. Head is in constant motion. Reading is difficult and experiences double vision. Mentally and physically awkward.
Androctonus – Destructiveness, mischievousness, suspiciousness and quickness to act. The patient’s nature oscillates between feeling like an angel and a devil alternately.
Carcinosin – Obstinate, obsessive and compulsive tendencies, but very talented. Insomnia and sleep issues; hyperactivity; desires milk which aggravates symptoms; addictive tendencies.
Cuprum Metallicum – great tension, irritability and maliciousness. Difficult to handle with aversion to touch or to be approached. Aggressive with parents driving them to despair. Obsessive, inflexible and tense. Child often has tics and bangs their head.
Helleborus – Slow in answering. Thoughtless; staring; involuntary sighing. picks lips and clothes. Sensorial depression. Sees, hears, tastes imperfectly and general muscular weakness.
Saccharum Officianale – restores emotional contact with parents, siblings and classmates. Can help children to understand what others feel and help them to express once again their own feelings.
Thuja – Ill effects from vaccinations. Fixed ideas. Seems as if soul and body have been separated.

Agaricus Muscaris: This is known as Bug Agaric, Toad Stool or Amanita Muscaria which is a variety of wild mushroom with psychoactive properties. Over the years, its importance has been accepted in Homeopathy, as Agaricus Muscaris. Mushrooms have the medicinal properties of fighting cancer, eliminating fungus and many other illnesses. This wild Mushroom contains several toxic compounds, the best known is Muscarin, which can act as an intoxicant to the brain producing more vertigo and delirium than alcohol, followed by profound sleep with lowered reflexes. Some important symptoms of this Mushroom poisoning are: jerking, twitching, trembling, and itching. Various forms of neuralgia, spasmodic affections, and neurotic skin troubles are pictured in its symptomatology. Two independent research studies have confirmed that the effects of the active ingredient, psilocybin, depresses or slows the activity of brain function. When used in a Homeopathic form which is trituration of the dried up cap or tincture of the fresh fungus, this remedy acts directly upon cerebral centers, increasing brain activity.
This remedy is indicated to patients’ who are out of humor, self willed, morose, stubborn. Behave stupid, crazy, suppressed, non-aggressive and are absolutely fearless. Are very talkative, but indifferent and will not answer when questioned. Children are late bloomers, late learning to talk, walk, slow in comprehending, are irresolute, very dependent, restless fidgety, wild at playing. They lack focus. Complain of twitchings, spasms and convulsions. Children can go into spasms if punished or scolded. Children keep rolling their head and bite themselves. They have difficult coordination, are awkward, clumsy and stumble while walking.
Jerking, twitching, trembling, and itching are strong indications of this remedy. These patients are sensitive to pressure and cold air. Their perception of relative size of objects is lost, takes long steps and jumps over small objects as if they were trunks of trees, a small hole appears as a frightful chasm, a spoonful of water an immense lake. They get furious with raging delirium, screaming, raving, wants to injure themselves. Their head is in constant motion, falling backwards as if there is some weight inside. These patients may have Dyslexia, difficulty reading, as letters seem to move or swim. Their symptoms are worse from open cold air, after eating. They feel better when they move about slowly.
Baryta Carbonicum: This remedy is made from Carbonate of Barium, a substance found in the body. When the body contains too little Barium then the growth processes slow down. As Barium easily dissolves in air, it is often difficult to obtain it in its pure form, so this remedy is made from mineral Barite and Witherite, found mainly in ancient rocks.
This remedy is specially indicated in infants, shabby looking children, who do not grow and develop normally physically and mentally. Development is delayed, with slow learning to walk and talk. May have no speech at all. Children are confused, just sit in a corner and stare, do not want to play. Have no friends. Children are exceptionally shy and timid, hide behind their mother. Have an aversion to meet strangers. Are mentally weak, have a weak memory, do not advance at all with difficulty in learning, comprehending, lack confidence. They are very immature in their behaviors. Even adults behave childishly.
These individuals are usually very neat and perfectly dressed, are very conscientious about their appearance. They are under-sensitive to pain. Bite finger nails. These children are very weak and weary, take cold easily. These patients are short for their age, face looks pale, puffed up, with a swollen abdomen, and swollen tonsils. These patients may have difficulty swallowing solid foods, when food enters esophagus they feel gagged and choked. They can only swallow liquids.
Bufo Rana: This remedy has an excellent action on the nervous system. It is made from poison of a Toad (the toad releases this poison from a gland situated at the back of its neck, when it is irritated). It acts on the brain so is used in imbecility and insanity. This is a brilliant remedy for Autism.
This remedy works very well on the mind and intellect of feeble minded children who are very restless, impatient with inclination to bite. These patients are intellectually dull, desire solitude even though are afraid of being alone, whine, scream and cry until they fall asleep. They are sad, restless, impatient, howl. These children grow physically but their mind does not mature with age, they have a weak memory and are unable to comprehend things, are also difficult to potty train. They have all types of perverted habits. They cannot tolerate bright objects and music. Children have partial or complete vision impairment, with no obvious damage to the eye. Music is unbearable to them, every little noise distresses them. These patients may have a staggering gait.
 Cicuta Virosa: This remedy tincture is made from fresh root of Water Hemlock gathered at time of flowering, a semi-acquatic plant that grows in ditches and on the banks of pools and rivers. This plant contains Cicutoxin, which disrupts the workings of the Central Nervous System. In humans, Cicutoxin in crude form rapidly produces symptoms of Nausea, Emesis and abdominal pain, typically within 60 minutes of ingestion. Poisoning can lead to Tremors and Seizures. A single bite of the root (which has the highest concentration of Cicutoxin) can be sufficient to cause death. This plant in a potentized Homeopathic dose acts on the nervous system and is an outstanding remedy for Autism.
This is an exceptional remedy for patients who are violent with frightful distortions, have violent and strange desires, do absurd things. Keep moaning and howling. They exhibit childish, foolish behaviors. Can get delirious with singing, dancing and funny gestures. Everything appears strange and terrible. They puzzle present with the past. Their head stays turned or twisted to one side. They stare persistently at objects. They dislike company so much that avoid sight of people, are insecure with uncertain fears. They are unable to read, because they feel as if letters disappear when reading. Objects recede, approach and seem double. They have difficulty hearing. Have a disposition to grind teeth. They desire to eat unnatural things like coal.
Hyoscymus Niger: This plant is known as Niger seed and is a nutritious Bird feed. In crude form the plant is poisonous, affecting the brain and nervous system due to its hallucinogenic properties. The smell of the flowers produces dizziness. When prepared in Homeopathic doses this is a well suited remedy for Autistic children who are constantly jerking, spinning, picking at clothes, keep babbling with unclear speech. Is best suited to patients who are violent, cry loudly for no apparent cause, and have a biting tendency. Their speech is impaired. They are unseemly and immodest in acts, gestures and expressions, laughing at everything and attempting to run away. They have a strong fear of water and of being left alone, even in another room. Their vision is far sighted from infancy. These patients are very talkative and persists in stripping themselves or uncovering genitals. They like to play with their genitals. They are easily prone to infections, have tremulous weakness with twitching of tendons. It is difficult to potty train these children. Their symptoms are worse at night, after eating, when lying down.
Kali Bromatum: This remedy is made from Potassium Bromide, which in crude form affects the mind and nerves, producing failure of mental power, general numbness and anesthesia of mucous membranes especially eyes, throat and skin.
This remedy works on children who are constantly fidgety, must do something or move about, also restless in sleep with grinding of teeth and sleep walking. They get night terrors. They can pronounce any word told, but cannot speak otherwise. They forget what they learn, have a weakness of memory. These patients can be delusional, have a fear of being poisoned. They imagine as if they are singled out or are an object of wrath.
Lycopodium Clavatum: also known as Lycopodium, Wolfs Claw & Club Moss, Lamb’s Tail & Fox Tail, Running Pine & Witch Meal, Stag’s Horn Moss & Vegetable Sulfur. This plant has been used for medicinal purposes since the Middle Ages, and it continues to be of great help to people even now.
The Homeopathic remedy of Lycopodium is made by taking the spikes of the plant which are cut in the summer and their spores are collected. These are then steeped in alcohol for at least five days. Then the solution is filtered, diluted, and succussed or shaked. What remains after this process is a Homeopathic remedy that has helped many people and will continue to do so.
This remedy is suited to individuals who are intellectually keen, but physically weak. Upper part of their body is emaciated, and lower part is semi-dropsical. These patients look thin, withered, malnourished, with catarrhal and flatulent tendencies. Their symptoms characteristically run from right to left, acts especially on right side of body, and are worse from about 4 to 8 pm. They are very sensitive to noise and odors, every noise causes a peculiar echo in their ear. They are head strong and haughty, but lack self-confidence, with an aversion to undertaking new tasks. Have a weak memory, with confused thoughts. They spell or write wrong words and syllables. They cannot bear to see anything new. Cannot read what they write.
Tuberculinum: This remedy is prepared using Tuberculinum bacillus obtained from an infected tissue of any human or animal suffering from Tuberculosis. The bacterium is disinfected, dissolved in decontaminated water, watered down and subsequently succussed. The resultant solution is the Homeopathic remedy Tuberculinum, which does not contain any trace of the bacterium. Tuberculinum is an exceptional remedy for inherited cases of Autism, in children who are under developed physically and mentally, feeble, sickly looking and prone to respiratory illnesses. These children are very inactive, with an aversion to doing anything. They are always irritable, screaming with restlessness. They are hungry all day with continuous eating but still losing weight. They babble in sleep with grinding of teeth. Are over sensitive to pain, and always very chilly. They alternate between being depressed and cheerful. Have a strong fear of dogs and cats. Have a strong desire to use foul language, curse and swear every time. Their symptoms get worse from motion, music, before a storm, on standing, early morning and from dampness. They feel better in open air.

  • Providing structure, routine, schedules and other appropriate supports when dealing with transitions or difficult situations, will help avoid frustrations.
